Sherlock Holmes. Robert Downey Jr.

'Nuff said.

I'm sorry, I think I need a moment. Is it a little warm in here? Anybody got a cigarette?

  1. Pass the smelling salts!
When you have eliminated the impossible, whatever remains, however improbable, must be Robert Downey Jr.

  3. Now that's funny (snort... tee hee). Of course Hollywood lost me a long time ago. Twins (de Vito/Shwarzneggar). Robin Hood (Costner).

  4. now, now, PSA let us not prejudge the whole enterprise without sufficient evidence. I like the casting, I don't mind the action either -- Holmes is described as a champion boxer more than once. I just hope they keep the cocaine addiction.

  5. Keep in mind, they like to pack all the whiz-bang into the trailers to entice the boys. I'm envisioning something a little closer to 'From Hell', but we'll see. In any case, we're all about the Steampunkitude here at the Smith household these days, so there is much joy and sketches being drawn.

And FYI, it's NOT Hollywood - it's a British production. The director is Guy Ritchie, who isn't exactly deep but certainly not American-conventional.

  7. okay. i just watched the trailer again and it is just wrong. i like robert downey jr a great deal but he is no sherlock holmes. hell jude law would be a far better choice to portray holmes. i'd far rather watch the old rathbone films or the british serial from the late 80s and early 90s.

as for hollywood, it certainly isn't a british film, it is a guy ritchie film shot in england as a branch office for a hollywood distribution through the same company that is doing the new terminator flick. i'm saddened that the homes legacy hasn't been shown proper respect here. i hope they lose money on this.

  8. Meh. I could care less who's putting up the money. Ever looked at the pedigree of a recent 'Canadian' film? The director's British, most of the cast and crew are British, the creatives are (I think, mostly) British... It may not be 100% pure British, but nothing is these days. But it's certainly not some Hollywood sausage factory production.

You can't fool me - you just want him to wear the hat and say 'indubitably'. I'll bet you hated the new Star Trek too. BUZZKILL!

  9. you know me too well ;-)

you mean the new trek with the steamy, passionate spock making lurv with the ladies amid the ridiculous lens flares. yeah, hated that they made it. again, a matter of fixing what isn't broken. in a universe as wide open as the trek franchise, all they could think of making was star trek 90210? if they're supposed to be in an alternate timeline/dimension where are the goatees? hell, i can come up with a better idea for moving the trek franchise forward without re-imagining/crapping on the original.

and yes, holmes being turned into a sexy victorian mcgyver offends my sensibilities. yes he should be wearing the deerstalker, no he shouldn't look like a tousled cherubic naughty lad. he should look like sherlock holmes. if i'm a buzzkill, i can accept that. i just want better than what is being foisted off on audiences that are more willing by the season to accept dumbed down, multi-million dollar, blinding product placements.
