Ethics to Lisa Raitt: "As long as you promise to never, ever do it again!"

UPDATE: This story actually made it to the front page of the Milton Champion today! No mention of yours truly of course (or of Impolitical, who graciously tossed me the original link). But given that there's been no mention of Lisa Raitt's 'Compliance' anywhere else, and given that the writer peruses this blog on ocassion, it's not outside the realm of possibility that he found out about it right here.

Yep. I'm just your friendly neighbourhood muckraker. You know... in a good way.

Big H/T to Impolitical for embarrassing me on Twitter (in an entirely friendly way) over my recent lack of Raitt-related blogging, and for pointing me towards this fascinating little document, signed on October 9th by Lisa Raitt:

Conflict of Interest Act

AGREED COMPLIANCE MEASURE

I, Lisa Raitt, Minister of Natural Resources, have agreed not to participate in matters involving the Cement Association of Canada (CAC), or Mr. Michael McSweeney acting on behalf of the CAC, in order to prevent any conflict of interest, and in particular not to give preferential treatment to Mr. Mc Sweeney or the CAC. Any dealings between CAC and the Department of Natural Resources will be addressed by the Deputy Minister or such other person as may be designated by the Deputy Minister.

Signature Original signed by
Name: Lisa Raitt, P.C., M.P.
Date[YYYY/MM/DD]:2009/10/09

That would have been... lessee... eight days after the story broke and the NDP first asked the Conflict of Interest and Ethics Commissioner to look into allegations that both the Toronto Port Authority and the actively lobbying CAC were involved in promoting a purely partisan Lisa Raitt fundraiser.

Horse. Barn door. You get the drift.

I still want to know what she paid the Toronto Port Authority $354.93 for under her election campaign 'Other Office' expenses. Business cards? Party room? A teeney-tiny severance package?

Runesmith, Girl Detective, is on the case. Never fear.

Senator says he's victim of Tory colleague
OTTAWA — The Conservative senator at the centre of a controversy over a $1.4-million federal contract that was awarded to a consortium which included an engineering firm where he worked says he's the victim of attacks from within his own caucus.
Leo Housakos, a prominent Tory organizer in Quebec, told La Presse that details about a party fundraising event last spring were leaked to the media by a fellow Conservative who was out to get him.
"It's someone from my own caucus and I will take care of him soon," Housakos told the Montreal newspaper.
The ethics officer in the Senate and the Federal Bridge Corporation are looking into the matter following revelations that members of the firm and directors from the Crown corporation attended the Conservative party event in May, a few months before the contract was awarded to study the future of the Champlain Bridge.

  6. This is all fascinating, but could you please restrict your comments to the subject at hand and stop using my blog as your blog? They are very easy to set up, and once you do you can post and quote articles to your heart's content.

    Thanks!

  8. Lisa Raitt has a lot of work cut out for her, at this point in time, just to regain Canada's confidence. I doubt she ever will. Her handling of the Isotope shortage has left her for ever etched in our minds as the Minister who referred to Cancer as a Sexy Problem.

As far as this most recent debacle, she should have known that she was not going to be able to so 'publicly' break the rules and not raise Eyebrows in the media and on the Hill.

I do not see a long career in politics for this MP. But let's not rush her, there is no reason to discourage her to the point that she loses faith in her ability. In fact, I hope she sticks around long enough to lose her seat. After all, there is Nothing 'Sexy' about Resignations.

    p.s. Impolitical is awesome.

  9. Lisa Raitt days ahead is that she will be looking for a new job after the next election.A new movement in Halton is to get this Sexey M.P. kicked out of office and bring back Honour in Halton.
Ever try to get an appointment at her Milton office?
Friends are still waiting after 6 months to meet with her.
Her local Milton office is run like a Circus.
What kind of back room deal was done with Harper's boys.
Why did she kick her campaign manager D'arcy Keene out on the street? Change Raitt in the next Election.

  10. The real story is why hardly anybody is picking this up.  Raitt signed a letter pretty much acknowledging crossing the line.

No wonder Harper is out in front in a Canadian-paid presser telling Canadians he personally does not watch Canadian news.

Good job, Bloggers!  Runesmith et al and Impolitical: you're #1.
