They (mostly) give environmental reasons for their opposition but rarely or never can answer the question "and the alternative is?" Most seem to think if we simply do nothing the problem of waste disposal will go away or say that recycling can / will reduce our output to zero. We must indeed do a MUCH better job on recycling, particularly on discarded consumer items but there will always be some waste. Let us at least use the best technology to use the energy released by the destruction of our waste , whether that be by rotting or burning, to supply some hydro. It is now MUCH easer to remove pollutants from smokestacks than it is to stop it from getting into our ground water, not much use having pristine air to breathe if all our drinking water and crops are contaminated with chemicals.
When we consider that our manufactures and suppliers are the ones making all the money on these, often disposable, products and that very few of then take ANY responsibility for the return, salvage or recycling of their product it can be seen that we have a LONG way to go!Ruralhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11814103548500393628noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1892827037183316611.post-31738716164787747832008-02-26T12:41:00.000-05:002008-02-26T12:41:00.000-05:00Whooee! When we strive fer the best (i.e. clean environment), we become aware of existing technology or methods that will improve things and also of cutting edge technology or methods which promise to do much better.

I heard a quote from a UN guy wrt world hunger an' it went somethin' like this:

"We can't let the perfect be the enemy of the possible."

There's always some sorta compromises needed. If we wait for a 100% perfect solution, we'll wait forever and waste valuable opportunities to do something now.

I wonder if Milton looked into using plasma converters to zap their waste.
